Service history check

What does the report show?

Where records are available, your report can show:

  • Service dates and recorded mileage
  • The servicing dealer and work carried out, where supplied
  • The order of recorded services, so you can spot possible gaps
  • The car's factory specification

You can compare service mileage with MOT mileage readings to investigate discrepancies; our free mileage check lists every MOT reading. A gap in the digital record does not prove that a service was missed: work carried out by an independent garage may only be documented on an invoice.

How to check a car's service history

  1. Enter the registration number. Confirm you have the right vehicle.
  2. Review the available records. Look at service dates, mileage and any details of the work recorded.
  3. Check the supporting paperwork. Ask the seller for invoices or other evidence covering services that do not appear in the digital record.

If a seller advertises "full service history", compare the evidence with the service intervals recommended for that particular car. A report is useful evidence, but it cannot confirm every service ever performed. Our guide on how to check a car's service history covers paper books and invoices too.

No stamped service book?

Some manufacturers and dealers keep digital service records instead of relying on a stamped book. That means a missing book does not automatically mean a car has not been serviced.

Digital coverage differs by manufacturer, model and vehicle. Independent garage work may not appear in the available digital records, so ask for invoices as well.

Why check service dates and mileage?

A service record helps you see when maintenance was documented and whether the mileage progresses as expected. Compare it with the seller's paperwork and MOT history. If dates, mileages or descriptions do not make sense, ask the seller or servicing garage for an explanation before buying.

A service history check cannot establish the car's condition today. An inspection remains worthwhile, especially if significant maintenance is due.

Service history check questions

Can I check service history using a registration number?

Yes. Enter the registration to identify the car and see the service records available through the £8.99 report. Coverage and the level of detail vary by vehicle.

Does the report include services from independent garages?

They may not appear in the available digital records. Ask the seller for garage invoices and receipts to build a fuller picture.

What does "full service history" mean?

It generally means there is evidence of servicing at the intervals recommended for the vehicle. Check the dates, mileage and supporting documents; the phrase in an advert is not proof on its own.

Does no digital service record mean the car has never been serviced?

No. A car may have been serviced at a garage whose work is not in the available digital records. Ask for invoices, receipts or confirmation from the garage.

What else is included in the £8.99 report?

The factory specification is included alongside the available service history: the model, build date, engine, gearbox, original colour and interior, and the options fitted at the factory. You can see how it looks in our sample report.
